Portrait Hands

I first started the hands series when I was photographing my mother who was slipping into a non-verbal Alzheimer’s world. I wanted to capture her, the person I loved, and whilst I took her formal portrait I took a few of her hands. So much can be seen in hands – a life lived, and I wanted to show the beauty of these aged hands with so much character and individualism. The large scale is to give the sitter a presence that cannot be overlooked.
My sister entered my studio and even with paintings of several people’s hands on the walls, she recognised our mothers, instantly.
